The ficus is a robust indoor green plant that requires little watering . We recommend giving it a small amount of water once a week in spring and summer and reducing it to once every 10 days in fall and winter. The amount and frequency of watering depends on your environment. Make sure to let the soil dry thoroughly before watering your plant again. To maintain the tropical environment of your plant, you can mist its leaves with water. This action also allows you to clean them, which you can do with a slightly damp cloth. This helps remove impurities from the leaves of your plant and keeps insects away.
Watering your ficus according to its size
By Charlot ficus trees are available in 3 different sizes: Large, Extra Large and Grandiose.
In Large size, the amount of water to give your plant is equivalent to a double espresso, or between 10 and 15 cl of water.
In Extra Large size, the amount of water to give your plant is equivalent to a small glass of water, or approximately 20 cl of water.
In Grandiose size, the amount of water to give your plant is equivalent to a large glass of water, or approximately 40 cl of water.
The values and information indicated are recommendations and therefore vary depending on the environment in which the plant is located. The amount and frequency of watering depends on the exposure and humidity level of your home. Plants are living beings, their maintenance is not an exact science, observation will be your ally to take care of them in the best possible way.
How do I know if my ficus needs watering?
There are several signs that can warn you that your plant needs water. If its leaves are drooping, your plant is lacking moisture; water it and it will be perfectly healthy.
We recommend waiting until the soil is dry before watering your ficus again. Dry soil on the surface doesn't always indicate thirst. When in doubt, always touch the soil with your finger; if the soil is dry to 1.5 cm, you should water the plant. The soil is sometimes wetter than you think.
What are the light conditions for your Ficus?
The Elegant , The Diplomat or The Magnificent , these ficus trees by Charlot can be placed in bright rooms but also adapt to partial shade . However, like all green plants, this lack of light can slow down their growth.
La Fabuleuse and La Sublime are plants that require brighter exposure. Place your plant in a bright room with bright but indirect light.
Tips for taking good care of your ficus:
Easy to maintain , the ficus remains a living being. We therefore advise you not to expose it to direct sunlight. This could burn its leaves. In winter, keep it away from radiators which dry out its soil and leaves. To keep it healthy, your ficus will thrive indoors between 15°C and 30°C .
To ensure your ficus shines all year round, we recommend adding a natural fertilizer during its growing period, from March to October.
How to prune your ficus?
Depending on the variety of your plant, its size will vary. In the case of rubber ficus , such as ficus elastica or ficus lyrata, we recommend pruning them in the spring. To prune, cut the central stem of your ficus to the desired height. This will allow new branches to grow and your plant will be even more beautiful.
Caution: Ficus sap is a toxic latex, so wear gloves when pruning your plant. Wash your hands thoroughly afterward and never touch your face.
For Ficus microcarpa, you can prune the stems of your plant to give it the shape of your choice.
When to repot your ficus?
Repotting plants is usually done in late winter or early spring before the growing season.
The main sign that your plant needs repotting is its imbalance. A plant's imbalance means it's drooping due to the weight of its foliage and stems.
Don't choose a pot that is too large; a size above a few centimeters will be more than enough.
To repot your ficus, aerate the roots of your plant by gently shaking the root ball. Add a new, well-draining substrate to your new pot and place your ficus in it. After adding soil almost to the top of your pot to allow for optimal watering, you can add a little water to your plant to settle the soil.
Once your ficus is repotted, place it in a bright room before moving it to a shadier area if you wish.
