How to care for your Aglaonema?

How to water my Aglaonema?

Aglaonemas are houseplants that require regular watering, always in small amounts. In spring and summer, we recommend watering your plant 1 to 2 times per week. As fall and winter approaches, you can space out watering. We recommend adding water to your plant once every 15 days.

What is the best type of water for my plant?

Like most indoor plants, Aglaonema is sensitive to the limescale present in tap water. Ideally, we recommend watering your plant with rainwater whenever possible. This option can be complex when living in an apartment. To do this, before watering your plants with tap water, let your water aerate to reduce the limescale content in it.

How much water should I give my Aglaonema?

Aglaonemas By Charlot are available in Standard and Large sizes. This variety of sizes allows you to choose the plant that suits you based on its color and size to best suit your interior. Watering quantities and frequencies depend on the exposure of your Aglaonema and the humidity level of your interior. Recommendations on the amount of water to add therefore vary depending on the environment in which the plant is located. Since plants are living beings, their maintenance is not an exact science, it is therefore important to observe them to take the best care of them. To help you water your Aglaonema, here are some tips based on their size:

  • Standard Size: The amount of water equivalent to an espresso, or 5 cl of water, is sufficient for these two plant sizes. However, you can adapt it according to the needs of your cactus.
  • Large size: a double espresso, or about 10 to 15 cl of water, will be enough to meet the needs of your cactus.

It is important to note that these amounts are recommendations and may vary depending on your home and the environment the plant is in.

How do I know if my Aglaonema needs watering?

When a plant is lacking water, there are several signs that can warn you. If your plant's leaves are drooping, it means it's lacking moisture. Water it and it will be perfectly healthy.

We recommend waiting until the soil is completely dry before watering your Aglaonema again. Dry soil on the surface does not always indicate thirst. When in doubt, we recommend always touching the soil with your finger; if the soil is dry to 1.5 cm, you should water the plant. The soil is sometimes wetter than you think. However, we recommend checking that your plant's substrate is dry because a plant that has received too much water is unlikely to survive compared to a plant that is lacking water.

What is the right exposure for Aglaonemas?

Aglaonemas are plants that require a bright, even sunny environment to thrive. Place your plant in a room with good exposure to promote growth. Avoid direct sunlight, as this can burn the leaves of your plant.

Your interior is not very bright, this risks reducing the growth of your plant and in certain situations dulling its foliage.

What are the ideal conditions for growing Aglaonemas?

Native to tropical regions, Aglaonemas are cold-tolerant plants. They can thrive indoors between 15°C and 30°C, but a temperature between 18°C and 21°C is ideal for their proper growth.

To ensure optimal growth of your Aglaonemas, we recommend adding natural fertilizer in spring and summer. At this time of year, you can also mist its leaves to increase humidity.

How do I prune my Aglaonema?

Pruning Aglaonema is generally straightforward and can be done to promote healthy growth, control the plant's shape, and remove damaged parts. To do this, you'll need clean, disinfected gardening scissors to reduce the risk of spreading disease, as well as a pair of gloves for protection.

We recommend identifying the leaves you want to prune, whether they are yellow, damaged, or to even out the visual appearance of your plant. Cut the chosen leaves at the base, just above the point where the leaf stem meets the main stem of the plant. Do not prune more than one-third of the plant at a time to avoid excessive stress. Moderate pruning is generally best to promote healthy growth of your Aglaonema.

What are the tips for repotting my Aglaonema?

To repot your Aglaonema, you'll need your plant, some potting soil, and a slightly larger pot (a few centimeters larger in diameter). Repotting is usually done in early spring before your plant's growth period, about once a year or once every two years depending on your plant's growth.

Aerate the roots of your plant by gently shaking the root ball. Add potting soil to your new pot and place your Aglaonema inside. After adding soil almost to the top of your pot, to allow for optimal watering, you can add a little water to your plant to settle the soil.

Your Aglaonema is now repotted. Place it in a bright room and it will grow optimally!

How do I keep my Aglaonema healthy?

My Aglaonema is infested with small creatures, what should I do?

Some insects can infest your plant: mealybugs and red spiders .

If you have a white mass on the leaves of your Aglaonema, it could be mealybugs. Be careful, as mealybugs can spread from plant to plant. Move your Aglaonema away while you treat it.

To remove mealybugs, mix one dose of black soap in one liter of water and spray the mixture on your plant. Once this is done, we recommend removing the white clumps with a damp cloth.

If you have red spider mites on your plant, mist the leaves with water. These insects fear humidity and will disappear.

Are aglaonemas suitable for pets?

Aglaonemas are toxic to pets if they ingest the plant's leaves. In this case, we recommend keeping them away from your plant.

What should I do if my aglaonema's stem turns brown and soft?

If your plant's base begins to soften and turn brown, this could be due to a variety of factors. This could be caused by exposure to cold or frost, or by your plant freezing. Therefore, it needs to be replaced. It could also be caused by overwatering. In this situation, we recommend repotting your plant to aerate the substrate. However, this may not be conclusive and your plant may not survive.

The leaves of my aglaonema are folding in on themselves and falling off: what should I do?

If your aglaonema's leaves start to curl up and droop, it means your plant is lacking water . We recommend watering your plant, always in small amounts, to keep it healthy.

You can also mist the leaves of your aglaonema to increase its humidity. This will help its leaves stay less dry and will straighten up.

What should I do if my aglaonema leaves are less vibrant?

Aglaonemas come in a variety of colors. At By Charlot, we have pink aglaonemas: La Rayonnante and more orange aglaonemas: La Festive . In the case of these two plants, the leaves are very colorful and can sometimes become a little duller. If this happens to your plant, it means it is lacking light. We recommend placing your aglaonema in a brighter room with better exposure. Be careful not to place your plant in direct sunlight, as this could burn its leaves and leave brown marks.

My aglaonema has yellow leaves: what does this mean?

For indoor plants, yellow leaves are a sign that the plant has a specific problem, this can happen for different reasons:

  • If the soil is very wet, yellow leaves mean your plant has received too much water. We recommend repotting it with a well-draining substrate and waiting until the soil is completely dry before watering it again.
  • If the soil is dry at a depth of 1.5 cm, this means your plant is lacking water. We recommend watering your plant, always in small amounts.
