Cacti are desert plants native to the Americas. These fleshy plants, belonging to the Cactaceae family, require little maintenance. Cacti are xerophytic plants. This means they store water in their stems to withstand long periods of drought.
There are more than 2,500 species of cactus, which explains their diversity of shape: elongated, conical or round and of varying sizes.
How to differentiate cacti from euphorbias?
Cacti and euphorbias are two desert plants that are quite similar in appearance . However, they do have some differences. Cacti have areoles on the stems of the plant, and the spines emerge from the base of these areoles. Conversely, the spines of euphorbias are an integral part of the plant. Cactus spines are often harder and sharper than those of euphorbias. Cacti generally do not have leaves. While some varieties of euphorbia may have small, though often insignificant and seasonal, leaves .
Unlike euphorbias, cacti do not have toxic latex as sap.
How to care for your cacti?
Watering rules for a cactus
Native to desert regions, cacti require infrequent, if not rare, watering. We recommend watering your cactus once a month in spring and summer and stopping watering completely in early fall and throughout winter. These cacti need little watering because they store water in their stems. This allows them to compensate for periods of drought in their natural environment and therefore require less water when grown indoors.
Even though cacti are watered infrequently, they still need nutrients for optimal growth. When you resume watering them in spring and summer, you can add minerals to your plant with natural fertilizer. We recommend adding Desert Elixir fertilizer once a month when watering your plant. This fertilizer should be added directly to the watering water. Pour 2 drops of fertilizer into 25 cl of water before watering your cactus.

What exposure for my cacti?
Cacti need a very bright environment to be healthy. They can also be placed in a bright room , but semi-shaded locations should be avoided if you don't want your cacti to wither. Insufficient light will cause your plant to fade at the ends. However, cacti remain plants with good adaptability and resilience. In a room with good light, your cactus will feel at home and will beautify your interior.
In their natural environment, cacti are exposed to direct sunlight. They are therefore resistant to it, however we advise you to avoid it because direct sunlight can cause brown spots and burns on your plant. Similarly, cacti are sensitive to coolness . They should be placed in rooms above 10-15°C. Conservatories are ideal areas for these cacti because they have good exposure to light. However, they are sometimes not heated and this can damage your plants. Place your cacti in your conservatory, provided it is heated.
Do you have a bright balcony or terrace without drafts or direct sunlight? This is the ideal location for your cacti in spring and summer. As soon as temperatures warm up and rise above 10-15°C, you can bring your cacti outdoors. Be careful to bring them indoors on rainy days as these plants are sensitive to overwatering!
How much water should you add to your cactus depending on its size?
At By Charlot, we offer cacti in 6 different sizes , ranging from Miniature to Grandiose. This way, you can find the height that best suits your interior. It is important to note that watering cacti is rare, so it is essential not to overwater your plants. The amount and frequency of watering depends on the exposure of your cactus and the humidity level of your interior. The recommendations on the amount of water to add are therefore variable depending on the environment in which the plant is located. Since plants are living beings, their maintenance is not an exact science, it is therefore important to observe them to take the best care of them. To help you water your cacti, here are some tips based on their size:
- Miniature: add a tablespoon of water to measure the amount of water and avoid wasting any.
- Small and Standard: The amount of water equivalent to an espresso, or 5 cl of water, is sufficient for these two sizes of plants. However, you can adapt it according to the needs of your cactus.
- Large: a double espresso, or about 10 to 15 cl of water, will be enough to meet your cactus' needs.
- Very Large: Add a small glass of water, approximately 20 cl of water.
- Grandiose: add a large glass of water, about 40 cl of water.
It is important to note that these amounts are recommendations and may vary depending on the environment the plant is in.
Repotting my cactus
We recommend repotting your cacti every 4 to 5 years , ideally in the spring. Since cacti have small roots, repotting is not a regular operation. To repot your cactus, we recommend that you do it with two people to make the operation easier and avoid pricking yourself.
To begin, put on gloves and remove your cactus from its current pot by gently pulling at the base of its central stem. Then, you can place your cactus in your new pot. It's important to keep your plant upright when repotting; the potting soil will keep it upright afterward.
How to prune a cactus?
Pruning your cactus may be necessary to control the growth of your plant or prevent the spread of disease. Before pruning your cactus, it is important to protect yourself from the plant's thorns by wearing gloves. When pruning your cactus, we recommend using a clean, disinfected knife rather than pruning shears. The blade of the knife allows for a more precise cut than pruning shears. The cut should be made at the base of a branch, that is, where two stems join. After cutting the desired stem, spray water on the cut branch to stop any sap from flowing.

How to keep your cacti healthy?
My cactus is wrinkled, what should I do?
Cacti are plants that require very little care, but they can sometimes show some signs of weakness. If your cacti start to wrinkle slightly, it means they are lacking water . Therefore, it is recommended to water them in small amounts to make them look their best.
My cactus is soft or turning brown
Despite their pest resistance, cacti can still be infected by fungi. If your cactus becomes soft or brown at the base, it may be due to overwatering . In this case, it is advisable to repot it with a free-draining potting mix. However, overwatering is the number one enemy of cacti. If rot has invaded the roots, your cactus unfortunately cannot be saved.
How do I know if my euphorbia is lacking light?
Cacti are desert-dwelling plants. These plants require a very bright environment to thrive. If your cacti lack light, their color will change from dark green to pale green .
In cases of insufficient light, you may also feel like your plants are growing rapidly, but this growth does not indicate good health. Your cacti are growing to seek out light. Move them to a brighter room and they will regain their natural beauty.
Has a white mass appeared on your cactus?
It's possible that your cactus is infested with mealybugs . In this case, keep it away from your other plants to treat these pests. Mix a liter of water with black soap, then use a cloth dampened with this mixture to remove the mealybugs from your cactus. However, unlike most plants, do not spray the water and black soap mixture directly onto your cacti. These plants are sensitive to humidity and this could damage them.
